Additional Information

Is the IET800 suitable for newborns?

Yes! The IET800 is suitable from birth. The colour coded display automatically adjusts normal and fever thresholds based on your child's age group (0-3 months, 3-36 months, and 36+ months), so you always get a reading relevant to your child's age.

Do I need to use a probe cover every time?

Yes, it is recommended to use a fresh disposable probe cover for each reading to maintain hygiene and accuracy. The IET800 includes 20 probe covers in the box, and the handy ejector makes removing used covers quick and easy.

Can I take a reading at night without waking my baby?

Absolutely. The IET800 features a dedicated night mode that mutes the sound and activates a backlight, allowing you to take a temperature reading in the dark without startling your little one. Results are also stored in memory for up to 32 readings, so you can easily track temperature changes over time.

How accurate is the IET800?

The IET800 is a TGA-registered medical device (ARTG 525670) with laboratory accuracy of ±0.2°C across the normal fever range (35.0–42.0°C). For the most reliable result, the guide recommends taking three readings 12 seconds apart and using the highest of the three. It's calibrated at manufacture, and Oricom recommends re-checking calibration every 12 months for ongoing accuracy.

How do I position the thermometer correctly in the ear?

Correct positioning is the single biggest factor in an accurate reading. Gently pull the ear to straighten the ear canal, then insert the probe so it aligns with the eardrum and fills the canal. For babies under 1, pull the outer ear outward and backward ; for children over 1 and adults, pull it outward and upward . If the probe isn't aligned with the eardrum, the reading will come back lower than the true temperature.

Why should I wait before taking a reading in certain situations?

Ear temperature can be temporarily thrown off by recent conditions, so the guide recommends waiting about 30 minutes after: coming indoors from the cold, swimming or showering (which cool the ear), or when the ear has been covered during sleep or by headphones or hearing aids (which warm it). Intense activity, crying or eating can also cause fluctuations, so a quiet 30 minutes beforehand gives the most reliable result.

Can both ears give different readings?

Yes — left and right ear readings can differ slightly. When you're tracking how a temperature is changing over time, always measure from the same ear so your readings are comparable.

Why does it need a probe cover to work?

The IET800 has a probe-cover detector and won't take a reading unless a cover is fitted — this protects hygiene and reading accuracy. A fresh disposable cover for each reading keeps things clean when several family members share one thermometer. It comes with 20 covers, and refill packs (part no. IETPC) are available on the Oricom site.

Can the whole family use it, including adults?

Yes. The IET800 is suitable for all ages from birth through to adults, with age-based thresholds so the fever guidance is accurate for each person. Note: it shouldn't be used by anyone with an ear condition such as otitis externa or otitis media.

How do I clean and store it?

Wipe the casing with a cotton swab dampened with warm water or a mild detergent; to disinfect, use a 75% alcohol swab on the casing and probe for about 30 seconds. Never immerse it in water or use abrasive cleaners, thinners or benzene, and avoid touching the probe lens — it's the most delicate part. Store it in its case to protect the probe between uses.

What batteries does it use, and are they included?

It runs on 2 x AA alkaline batteries, which are included in the box along with a protective case and 20 probe covers — so it's ready to use straight away. Only use alkaline (not rechargeable) batteries, and remove them if you won't be using it for a while to prevent leakage.
